CHAPTER 20

Gabriel

I fought to control my expression as I sat on the couch in the study where the rest of my fellow friends and brothers looked attentively at Tyriel.

“Thank you all for coming at such short notice. I realize the hour is quite late, but it cannot be helped.”

Tyriel leaned against the large mahogany desk at the head of the room. He was dressed in a sharp dark grey suit, his silver hair brushed back.

The guys and I always wondered about his past, speculating he could easily have been a king of the dragon clan. He was rumored to be as strong as the kings before him and we wondered about his actual age.

My attention drew back to his words.

“There have been some mixed opinions for the future of the clan’s leadership.” He revealed.

I could see the twins glance at each other and could practically read their minds.

Dragon clans practiced the old beliefs and traditions. And one of them was that twins were not considered whole. There was the belief they shared power and neither one would have the power to lead a clan. On top of that, it was believed that twins shared souls and if one became the leader, their loyalty to the clan would always be questioned.

Thankfully Tyriel abolished that rule for our clan in the west and Cassian and Julian were still considered in the running for heir. Too bad the twins seemed to reject this anyways. I’ve heard their parents had instilled the old way in them even in childhood.

I could see Julian look away while Cassian looked more interested in the new collection in the library behind me.

It’s hard to shake your family’s past.

Tyriel continued, bringing me back to the present.

“Therefore, one of the High Council across the pond has been nominated to observe and advise.” He concluded. “I’ll need you four to guide them and their entourage.”

I caught Alain’s keen gaze. “And why would you need all of us, Tyriel? We’ve all hosted foreign delegates for major events with ease. It would be more prudent to just send one of us to take care of our esteemed guests.”

Cassian shrugged in agreement with no particular interest in the assignment, while Julian hid a yawn and sitting back in the leather sofa beside his brother. Mikael looked worried, knowing he would be away from Naya, and she was already so heavily in her final trimester.

Tyriel smiled. “So, it would seem, master Alain. I am surprised the others don’t see this as an opportunity.”

I leaned forward. “I’m assuming they will be monitoring each of us regardless. Is it necessary to babysit them on top of that?” I couldn’t help but agree with Alain.

Alain scoffed, as he sat in the armchair across me.

“Are you counting yourself out then, Gabriel?”

I grinned at him. “I propose we run it together Al. We make a good team, after all.”

I saw a small twitch in the corner of his eye at the nickname the rest of us gave him when we were young and occasionally called him that to rile his feathers.
